How to Study Effectively for Exams

In this blog, you will learn how to study effectively in a way that you can ace any exam. Whether you are preparing for your boards, entrance tests or competitive exams- This blog will create a clearer image in your mind. Effective study is not about sitting with your books for hours, but about using your time and efforts wisely. You will learn what are the best study methods for you.
Here are some practically proven tips that will help you stay productive and teach you how to study effectively-
1.Create a separate study space
A dedicated study space makes our brain associate clean space with clean thoughts- making us focused. Therefore, a clutter free desk with comfy chair can alone make your study session more effective. Try to set the desk where you can get more natural light as it regulates our body’s circadian rhythm ensuring better mood and alertness.

2. Teach What You Learn
Teaching or saying out loud what you have learnt help in finding gaps in your understanding. Explaining to your friend, younger sibling or even yourself in the mirror will help figure out what parts are you confident in and where you are confused. This is known as Feynman Technique. It is a genius method because by this you will simplify complex topics and understand your weak points.

3. Pomodoro technique
If even 15 minutes of studying feels heavy on you- Pomodoro technique/ Time blocking is your way to effective studying. It is an incredible time management method which helps avoid any sort of boredom or burnout while learning. In this method, you can set a timer for 25-50 minutes (for studying) and then a timer of 5-10 minutes (for break time). After repeating this cycle for 4-5 times, you can go for a longer break of 20-30 minutes. There are many apps and websites available for this.

4. Do not multitask
Multitasking should not be done while studying. it might feel like you are covering a lot but in actual it makes the brain overwhelmed and scattered. Therefore, do not juggle too many subjects at once. Pick one subject per study session— like 1 hour for Economics, then 10 min break, then 1 hour for Accountancy. It will help in staying focused and reduce confusion.

5. Make books your best friend
You can ace any exam if you know your books in detail. I personally feel that books are a better source to study rather than phones. Phones are full of distractions – One moment you are watching a video lecture and the next moment texting a friend. Nowadays, most of the exams are subjective (Multiple-choice Questions based) – requiring thorough and in-depth knowledge about the topics. Therefore, use textbooks instead of mobile phones for a more productive study routine.

6. Eat the frog method
This method comes from the quote ‘If it’s your job to eat a frog, it’s best to do it first thing in the morning’. This method means doing the most difficult task first. One of main reasons for doing the most difficult task first is that our energies and willpower is highest in the beginning. Once the most dreaded task is done- You feel accomplished early and relaxed while doing the easier tasks. For example- mathematics is your toughest subject, then do it first.
7. Revise before you sleep
A quick recap about all you have studied in the day will help you retain more without extra efforts. Revising before sleep is not about opening your notes at night revising it instead it is just a little recap of all the topics while you are about to sleep. It will help you find if you are lacking in any topic resulting in more efficient and effective learning. It is literally the laziest but smartest way to improve memory while doing nothing but sleeping.

8. Reward your small wins
In the never-ending race of life, we keep rushing and forget to breathe. We need to think that completing a chapter, solving 5 question or staying focused for one hour is also a win. There is no need to wait for big results to feel proud of yourself. Take a walk, reward yourself with your favorite snacks or dance to your favorite song with worrying. This will make you feel relaxed and ready for the next study session.

These are my top tips on how to study effectively. These tips mixed with dedication, patience and perseverance will help you achieve what you what. Effective studying is about finding what works for you, staying consistent and loving yourself all along the way. Keep showing up — your small steps today are shaping something big tomorrow.
